Journal of Brain and Spine retain the right to reject any manuscript on the basis of unethical conduct in either human or animal studies.
Human Research
For human-related studies, ethical approval must be obtained. The article must include a statement indicating that ethical approval was granted (or that it was not required and the reasons why), along with the name of the ethics committee(s) or institutional review board(s), the approval number/ID, and a statement that the participants provided informed consent before participating (or a statement that consent was not required and the reasons why). In line with recommendations from the World Health Organization and the Declaration of Helsinki, clinical trials must be prospectively registered prior to enrolling participants. Clinical trial registration numbers must be included in all papers reporting on clinical trials.
For illustrations featuring recognizable individuals, whether living or deceased, great care must be taken to ensure consent for publication has been granted. Patient anonymity must be preserved. Photographs must be cropped sufficiently to prevent individuals from being recognized, and at a minimum, the eyes and eyebrows must be masked using coarse pixilation to make the individual unrecognizable.
Animal Research
For any experiments involving animals, authors must indicate the nature of ethical review permissions, relevant licenses (e.g., Animal [Scientific Procedures] Act 1986), and national or institutional guidelines for the care and use of animals under which the research was conducted.
