Message from the Editor-in-Chief: Exploring the Neural Universe, Safeguarding the Core of Life

"All of human dignity lies in thought.” When the philosopher Blaise Pascal penned these words, he could not have envisioned a day when we could capture the live electrical activity of a single synapse, nor could he have imagined that a single microchip might one day help restore mobility to individuals with spinal cord injuries.

Today, we are in a golden era for neuroscience and brain health research. The quest to unravel the mysteries of the brain and spinal cord extends far beyond understanding humanity’s most complex organ. It holds the key to addressing the major challenges posed by neurological diseases and advancing the health and well-being of humankind. Innovation-driven approaches and multidisciplinary integration are now the key engines for propelling breakthroughs in brain science and driving transformative advancements in diagnosis and therapeutic technologies.

It is within this context that the Journal of Brain and Spine (JBS, ISSN 3079-7802) was born. Closely aligned with the national strategic initiative "Brain Science and Brain-like Research (the Brain Project)", JBS leverages the robust academic and clinical platforms of the National Neurological Regional Medical Center, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance for Mental and Neurological Diseases, and Sun Yat-sen University. JBS is committed to establishing a high- impact international forum dedicated to cutting-edge research on brain and spine science.

The hallmark of JBS lies in its strong emphasis on the intersection of medicine and engineering, as well as its commitment to fostering multidisciplinary collaboration. The journal will prioritize groundbreaking work in the following promising frontier areas:Brain-Spinal Interface Brain-Computer Interface Neuromodulation AI-Assisted Diagnosis and Therapy.

These domains embody the convergence of neuroscience, clinical medicine, engineering, materials science, information science, and other disciplines. They represent the future of precise intervention for brain disorders, functional restoration, and health optimization. JBS aspires to serve as the premiere platform for the early dissemination and global exchange of innovative breakthroughs at this vital intersection of disciplines.

The launch of JBS marks a significant milestone for the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University as it strives to address national strategic needs, lead the charge in advancing brain science research, and deepen international academic collaboration. It reflects our unwavering commitment to fostering interdisciplinary innovation, achieving excellence in clinical translation, and embracing an open and inclusive approach to development.

We extend a heartfelt invitation to scholars, clinicians, and engineers around the world who are dedicated to brain and spine research to join the JBS community. Together, let us build and share a platform that showcases the most cutting-edge discoveries, the most breakthrough technologies, and the most impactful practices. We look forward to seeing JBS become a global hub of intellectual exchange, facilitating profound convergence and collaboration between medicine and engineering in the field of neuroscience. Let us work together to tackle the challenges of neurological diseases and contribute essential wisdom and solutions to safeguarding brain and spinal health for all.
